Nupe Typeface

Project Summary

Cutting and pasting through history which led to my own alphabet design. Looked at the letterforms of Phoenician, Greek, and Roman alphabets, and cut them out while analyzing the shapes, forms, and spaces that made up each character. The end product was a five-panel design in an accordion fold format made to be a promotion piece that led from the earliest letterforms to my own.

Pronounced n(y)o͞o͞ pā or new-pay, this typeface recalls the wood furniture of the Nupe people of Nigeria. Evoking the culture of the West African people its name refers to, Nupe has thick and pointed ascenders and descenders. Nupe has no counters and is a sans serif, which further conjures up images of a simple and primitive style.
